Ethanol 95% (Ethyl Alcohol) Research Solvent
Ethanol (CAS 64-17-5) at 95% is a polar protic solvent supplied here in a 30 mL bottle for laboratory use. It is miscible with water in all proportions and dissolves a wide range of moderately polar organic solutes, which makes it a routine choice for stock preparation, extraction and reconstitution work where an aqueous vehicle will not carry the solute.
Solvent Properties & Research Context
Polar protic. The hydroxyl group donates hydrogen bonds, so ethanol solvates polar solutes and ionic species differently from an aprotic solvent such as DMSO. Where a protocol specifies one, the two are not interchangeable.
Water miscibility. Complete miscibility with water allows dilution into aqueous buffer without phase separation, though solutes at their solubility limit may precipitate as the ethanol fraction drops.
The remaining 5% is water. 95% ethanol is not anhydrous. Reactions and preparations sensitive to water need absolute ethanol instead.
Volatility. Ethanol evaporates readily at room temperature. Keep containers closed to avoid concentration drift in stored stocks.
