Description

MCT Oil (Medium-Chain Triglycerides) Research Carrier

MCT oil (CAS 73398-61-5) is a mixture of glycerides of octanoic (C8) and decanoic (C10) acids, supplied in a 30 mL bottle as a lipophilic carrier for laboratory work with oil-soluble compounds. Unlike long-chain triglyceride oils it stays liquid and low in viscosity at room temperature, and its saturated medium-chain composition makes it markedly less prone to oxidative rancidity than polyunsaturated carrier oils.

Carrier Properties & Research Context

  • Defined chain-length range. C8 and C10 chains dominate, giving a more reproducible vehicle than a mixed-source natural oil whose fatty-acid profile varies by batch and origin.

  • Oxidative stability. Fully saturated chains carry no double bonds to oxidise, so stored preparations drift less than those in polyunsaturated oils.

  • Low viscosity. Pipettes and disperses more predictably than long-chain oils at ambient temperature.

  • Not water miscible. As a lipid vehicle it will not dilute into aqueous buffer; preparations requiring an aqueous phase need a surfactant or co-solvent system.

Research Applications

  • Lipophilic compound vehicles for oil-soluble research materials.

  • Formulation and solubility screening against alternative carriers.

  • Vehicle controls in preparations where the carrier itself must be accounted for.

Analytical Documentation

Composition and purity vary by manufacturing lot. Kimera Chems does not publish a single fixed purity figure for this item; refer to the batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA) issued for the lot received.

Storage & Handling

Store at controlled room temperature. Keep tightly closed.

Storage guidance is a house recommendation. Analytical documentation is per-lot release testing.
