Description

Alpha-GPC 50%

Identity

Alpha-GPC (L-alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine) is a naturally occurring choline-containing phospholipid metabolite and a direct biosynthetic precursor to acetylcholine. This preparation is standardized to 50% active Alpha-GPC by weight, adsorbed onto an inert carrier (silica or calcium phosphate) to stabilize the highly hygroscopic active.

Chemical name L-alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine
CAS 28319-77-9
Molecular formula (active) C₈H₂₀NO₆P
Molecular weight (active) 257.22 g/mol
Active content 50% (w/w); remainder inert carrier
Appearance White to off-white hygroscopic powder
Solubility Freely soluble in water
Storage Store at controlled room temperature. Keep tightly closed.

Storage guidance is a house recommendation. Analytical documentation is per-lot release testing.

Note on the 50% grade: Pure Alpha-GPC is extremely hygroscopic and difficult to handle as a free-flowing powder. The carrier-adsorbed 50% form improves gravimetric handling and short-term stability for laboratory weighing and solution preparation. For studies requiring the pure compound, pure-grade Alpha-GPC is the appropriate material.

Research applications

  • Acetylcholine synthesis pathway studies
  • Choline bioavailability and neurotransmitter turnover research
  • Cholinergic signaling and neuromuscular assays
  • Phospholipid metabolism studies

Quality control

  • HPLC for assay and purity
  • Loss on drying (LOD) for moisture content
  • Identity confirmation against reference standards
  • Batch-specific COA

Mechanistic Background

Alpha-GPC is cleaved in tissue to free choline and glycerophosphate, enlarging the precursor pool available for acetylcholine synthesis. Preclinical work has used it to raise brain acetylcholine and to probe cholinergic contributions to memory consolidation, making it a common positive-control precursor in cholinergic pathway experiments.

Handling note. Lopez et al. report region-dependent effects in hippocampus and cortex but not striatum, so tissue selection matters when designing acetylcholine measurements.
